What is the DIRG?
The Whyalla Disability Inclusive Reference Group (DIRG) is a group that works towards making Whyalla more accessible and inclusive for people with disability. We share ideas, discuss problems and look for ways to make our city more accessible.
What does the DIRG do?
We talk about issues that affect people with disability, raise concerns and share ideas with the council and other organisations to encourage positive changes.
Who can join the DIRG?
People with disability, family members, carers, support workers and other community members who are interested in making Whyalla more inclusive. Everyone is welcome.
Do I need experience or a disability to join?
No. You do not need special skills or a disability to get involved. Everyone’s ideas, opinions and experiences are valuable.
When and where are meetings held?
The DIRG meets regularly at an agreed location in Whyalla. Contact the group for meeting dates, locations and information about attending.
What happens at meetings?
Members discuss accessibility issues, share ideas, raise concerns and talk about ways to improve the community. You can take part in a way that feels comfortable to you.
What types of issues does the DIRG focus on?
We discuss things like accessible footpaths, public toilets, parking, transport, community events, buildings, communication and making local businesses more inclusive.
Can I share an issue or suggest an idea?
Yes! We welcome all ideas and feedback from the community. The DIRG can discuss issues and may raise them with the organisations responsible.
Can the DIRG fix accessibility problems?
The DIRG cannot fix every problem or make decisions for the council. However, we can share feedback, offer suggestions and encourage organisations to make improvements.
Does the DIRG work with the council and local organisations?
Yes. The DIRG can work with the City of Whyalla, local businesses and community organisations to share ideas and improve accessibility and inclusion.
