Visual Communication Board

In 2022, the Whyalla Disability Inclusive Reference Group celebrated the installation of Whyalla’s first Visual Communication Board at Wilson Park.

This was an important step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible community for everyone.

Visual Communication Boards provide another way for people to communicate using pictures and symbols. They can be used by anyone — whether they are non-speaking, have difficulty communicating verbally, are learning to communicate, or simply find visual communication easier.

It’s about making sure everyone has a voice, everyone can express themselves, and everyone feels included in their community.

And what makes this even more exciting is seeing that commitment to inclusion continue across Whyalla.

In 2025, Whyalla City Council upgraded Civic Park — its first major upgrade in nearly 20 years!

The new park includes a flying fox, in-ground trampoline and inclusive roundabout, along with perimeter fencing, rubber soft-fall surfacing, upgraded lighting, shaded seating and all-abilities play equipment.

These are more than just new playground features. They help create spaces where children and families with different abilities can play, participate and enjoy their community together.

From communication boards to inclusive play spaces, small changes can make a big difference.

It’s about continuing to build a Whyalla where everyone can participate, everyone belongs, and no one is left out.
